Long time Houston musicians Flowers To Hide will set the stage for the New Year with their distinctive breed of psychedelic pop. The quartet’s 2008 E.P. Down The Stairs, produced by Steve Christiansen at Sugar Hill Studios, has been considered one of Houston’s most unique releases in the last half-decade. David A. Cobb noted on the Houston Press’s Rocks Off blog that the band, “mixes the anthemic, fist-pumping qualities of Oasis with the low-key shoegazey feedback of Ride, and positively gushes glimmers of glam.”
Contrasting the longevity of Flowers To Hide, local newcomers If The War Should End will showcase their version of textured indie rock to the Houston music scene. The groups layered guitars, atmospherics, and sustained vocals are reminiscent of early Radiohead with a hint of Doves, and a dash of Snow Patrol; all making for a distinctly palette pleasing experience.
The Watermarks will also be on hand to spin some of their favorite tracks as the night goes on. Unlike any other band in Houston, their music gets airplay in the US and Canada, they have been featured in music blogs across the world, and have recently licensed two songs to be used on MTV’s Styl’d. Music reviewer Ted Maider of the infamous Consequence of Sound blog recently said, “The Watermarks are successfully able to maintain a sound that combines elements from post-punk, hard techno, and new wave, all resulting in what sounds like one of Tony Wilson’s Factory bands on steroids.”
